(Washington, DC, December 9, 2014) – Human Rights Watch is reviewing the redacted summary of the US Senate report about the Central Intelligence Agency’s detention and interrogation program. The Senate Intelligence Committee released the summary on December 9, 2014, but the much longer report remains classified.
“The Senate report summary should forever put to rest CIA denials that it engaged in torture, which is criminal and can never be justified,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “The report shows the repeated claims that harsh measures were needed to protect Americans are fiction.”
The Obama administration has ended many abusive practices covered in the summary, Human Rights Watch said.
Unless this important truth-telling process leads to prosecution of the officials responsible, torture will remain a ‘policy option’ for future presidents,” Roth said.
