For Immediate Release(Moscow, December 30, 2013) – The Russian authorities should immediately ensure access to water and public transportation in a village in Sochi affected by the upcoming Winter Olympic Games, Human Rights Watch said today, releasing a new video. Olympic construction has left the mountain village of Akhshtyr without a reliable water supply for more than five years and has cut villagers off from public transportation and other services.
“The Russian government is building the most expensive Olympics in history, but many Sochi residents have paid a very high personal price for these games,” said Jane Buchanan, associate Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The authorities cut Akhshtyr’s villagers off from basic services and have done woefully little to restore them.”
